Austria's flag has three equal bands of red, white, and red laid horizontally. This design is based on the coat of arms of the Babenberg dynasty, which was documented as early as the 13th century. Legend holds that the Austrian flag was invented by Duke Leopold V of Austria while he was fighting during the Siege of Acre. After a battle, his white surcoat was completely covered in blood, but when he removed his belt, there remained a strip of white underneath (red, white, red).
